An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, or ITIN, is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service. It is designed for individuals who are required to have a US taxpayer identification number but who do not have and are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number.
Who Needs an ITIN?
ITINs are commonly needed by nonresident aliens who are required to file a US tax return, resident aliens filing a US tax return based on days of presence, dependents or spouses of US citizens or resident aliens, and dependents or spouses of nonresident alien visa holders.
The Application Process
Applying for an ITIN involves submitting Form W-7 along with your federal tax return and original identification documents. This is where many applicants encounter difficulties, as the IRS requires original documents such as passports, which applicants are understandably reluctant to mail.
As a Certified Acceptance Agent authorized by the IRS, Kairos Insights can verify your identity documents in person. This means you keep your original passport and other documents, they never need to be mailed to the IRS.
Benefits of Having an ITIN
Beyond tax compliance, an ITIN provides several practical benefits that many people are not aware of.
- Tax filing: Meet your federal tax obligations and claim refunds you may be owed
- Banking: Open interest-bearing bank accounts at many financial institutions
- Credit building: Begin establishing a credit history in the United States
- Mortgage eligibility: Some lenders accept ITINs for home loan applications
- State identification: Some states accept ITINs for drivers license applications
Common Misconceptions
An ITIN does not provide authorization to work in the United States, does not provide eligibility for Social Security benefits, and does not change your immigration status. It is strictly a tax identification number.
